Gary Alan Levengood, MD

Gary A. Levengood, MD, FAAOS, was among the first board- certified orthopedic sports medicine surgeons in the nation. Having practiced orthopedics and sports medicine in Gwinnett County since 1996, he founded Sports Medicine South of Gwinnett in 2008.

Dr. Levengood’s interest in sports medicine began as an athlete. When an ACL injury cut his ended his professional soccer career, he pursued medical school and residency programs, followed by a sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Hughston Clinic.

As team physician, Dr. Levengood has previously served internationally for the US U-17 national team, as well as locally for the Atlanta Silverbacks and Georgia Force. He currently serves as team physician for eight high schools, as well as for Georgia Gwinnett College. Dr. Levengood has acted on the medical advisory board for the Georgia High School Association since 2000.

Dr. Levengood has long been actively involved at Northside Hospital Gwinnett and Duluth, serving as Chief of Surgery from 2002-2004, inaugural Chief of Orthopedic Surgery from 2004- 2008 and Medical Director of Sports Medicine since 2005. He was instrumental in the development of the Concussion Institute at Northside Duluth, as well as integrating certified athletic trainers into all Gwinnett high schools.

In 2019, Dr. Levengood was awarded the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame’s inaugural Pioneer Award for his commitment to sports medicine care for local athletes. His research has been published in multiple orthopedic journals, and he has previously served an Assistant Clinical Professor at Emory University and Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine-Georgia Campus.

Dr. Levengood and his wife Lisa reside in Grayson with there beloved hunting dogs. Their four children were all graduates of the GCPS system.
